The Peacock Butterfly (Aglais Io)

A beautiful Peacock butterfly in a handmade wooden frame mounted on high-quality acid-free conservation board. The Latin and common names are printed underneath the specimen.

The Peacock belongs to the Inachis family of butterflies. The name is derived from Greek mythology, meaning Io, the daughter of Inachus

This beautifully coloured butterly is found across Europe and Asia. It's peacock 'eyes' on each wing are thought to deter predators.

Its wingspan reaches 5 - 5.5 centimetres (1.9 - 2.16 in).
